The small community of Hamilton City, CA, is located in Glenn County, along the Sacramento River. Covering less than one square mile of land, Hamilton City is situated between Chico and Orland on State Route 32.
Hamilton City was founded in 1905 and soon became the site of a large sugar beet processing plant, built by James Hamilton and the Alta California Sugar Beet Company in 1906. The town’s population grew in the early 20th century thanks to the many jobs the plant created. Today, Hamilton City remains only about 200 acres in size, home to fewer than 2,000 residents. Hamilton Union High School is locally well known for its sports and agricultural programs, as well as its recognition as a California Distinguished School.
