The unincorporated community of Magalia, CA, is located in Butte County, in the forested mountains northeast of Chico. It covers 14 square miles of land with a population of fewer than 12,000 people.
The town was called Mountain View when it was first established as a mining camp after the 1849 California Gold Rush. A large dog breeding operation began the following year, and soon the community became known as Dogtown, which then became Magalia in 1861. By this time the town had become famous for the discovery of a 54-pound gold nugget, the world’s largest at the time. Today Magalia is known for its abundance of nature, including plenty of black tailed deer, raccoons and grey squirrels.
